BioFashionTech is working on the biobased future of circular textiles

Every year, large amounts of clothing and textiles are discarded. A significant share of this waste cannot be reused or recycled with existing mechanical or chemical methods because made of multiple tipe blends of natural ( cotton linen viscose) and plastic fibers (polyester nylon etc).

BioFashionTech focuses specifically on this hard-to-recycle textile waste.

Using biotechnology, BioFashionTech converts discarded textiles into new, bio-based raw materials. Through this process, cellulosic fibres are transformed into fermentable sugars for bio-based production, while synthetic fibres are recovered as recycled plastic materials.

Instead of being incinerated or landfilled, textile waste becomes a source of renewable inputs for multiple industries.

By reducing dependence on fossil and agricultural resources and extending the useful life of existing materials, BioFashionTech contributes to a more complete, resilient circular textile system.

What is BioFashionTech 'world famous' for?

What is BioFashionTech 'world famous' for?

BioFashionTech is known for transforming complex, mixed textile waste into multiple valuable raw material streams.

Rather than focusing on a single fibre type, BioFashionTech works with real-world textile waste composed of blended and mixed fibres—such as cotton, polyester, nylon, and other synthetics. Through a biotechnological process, the cellulosic fraction of these textiles is converted into fermentable sugars, while synthetic fibres are recovered as recycled plastic materials.

By addressing mixed-fibre textiles as a system rather than as individual components, BioFashionTech enables a flexible and scalable approach to circularity. This system-level solution creates new value from unavoidable textile waste and supports multiple downstream industries, from biotechnology and chemicals to plastics and materials manufacturing.

At the next birthday party, what will you say you're going to achieve with this SORTED subsidy?

Within the SORTED project, BioFashionTech works with partners across the textile value chain to validate and test biotechnological processes that convert textile waste into usable bio-based materials under real-world conditions. The subsidy enables the transition from laboratory-scale development to pilot-scale validation, supporting solutions that can be applied in practice.

As textile waste volumes continue to grow, SORTED supports BioFashionTech in adding a scalable, biotechnology-based solution alongside reuse and existing recycling routes, strengthening the overall circular textile system.
